The people of Venezuela have gone to the polls 11 times in seven years. Almost a superfluity of democracy, some might think, and signs of electoral fatigue could be detected in Sunday's elections for the National Assembly when only 30% of the electorate bothered to vote. The rest perceived the result as a foregone conclusion since in earlier elections President Hugo Chávez, or the candidates he backed, had stacked up substantial majorities. Sunday's poll followed the trend, and the Chávez list wiped the board.

For the fourth time, Venezuela’s opposition parties are undergoing a bizarre process implosion. One can only hope that this presumably last error (because they will be practically gone after that) will mean the rebirth of a responsible and constitutional opposition in Venezuela.

The supporters of the Hands Off Venezuela campaign in Greece have been working to build up the campaign within the Greek labour movement and youth. The official launch of the campaign on November 25 in the headquarters of the GSEE, the main trade union federation was a successful start.

On Saturday December 3^rd over 200 people attended the founding conference of the British Hands Off Venezuela campaign at the main hall of the London headquarters of NATFHE – the union of lecturers in further education. It was attended by people from all over Britain. The majority were activists in the British labour and trade union movement, although there was also a large number of youth and students.

Movements like those in Venezuela force everybody to take a stand - and the “progressive” liberal press is no exception.
