After a strong presence at an anti-imperialist march through downtown Montreal on Saturday, the Hands Off Venezuela team participated in a colloquium on agricultural issues at the University of Quebec at Montreal. Jorge Martin gave a presentation which outlined the various challenges Venezuelan farmers had faced before the revolution.

Tuesday, May 8^th marked the birth of Hands Off Venezuela in Victoria, British Colombia. Jorge Martin came to the University of Victoria during the evening to a crowd of some twenty people to educate about the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela, including its achievements and its obstacles.

Workers held protests outside the SIDOR steel plant in Puerto Ordaz yesterday, demanding that the government nationalize the company. Last Thursday, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez had warned that he might nationalize the Argentinian-owned company.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez announced the possibility of new nationalizations, including private banks and the steel industry, at an event to celebrate the industrial program Fábrica Adentro yesterday. The purpose of the event was the granting of funding to 49 different "productive companies" with the intention of reactivating and expanding national industry.

Thousands of Venezuelans came out yesterday in Caracas and in four other Venezuelan states to register for the new United Socialist Party of Venezuela. To emphasize the importance of the new party, President Hugo Chavez canceled his weekly TV program Aló Presidente yesterday in order to register himself in the new party.
