One year from the coup in Honduras - Down with the illegitimate government of Lobo - Solidarity with the Honduran people
- 23 June 2010
The Honduran people, organised around the National Front of Peoples Resistance, launched a sustained campaign of mass demonstrations, strikes and protests against the coup, demanding the restoration of Manuel Zelaya and the calling of a referendum on a Constituent Assembly to fundamentally change the country's political and economic structure.
The pressure of the Honduran people and the fact that the Micheletti regime was not recognised by any country, forced them to call an election. However, this took place in conditions of state of emergency, with no democratic guarantees, and therefore it was boycotted by the Resistance. This illegitimate election gave way to the government of Porfirio Lobo, a continuation of the Micheletti coup.
Under Porfirio Lobo we have seen a continuation of selective assassination of trade union leaders, peasant organisers, journalists, gay rights activists and generally the attempt to create an environment of fear to prevent the people from organising. This has not worked and the Resistance is still strong. Half a million marched in the capital Tegucigalpa on May Day. Now the Resistance has launched a campaign to collect 1.2 million signatures demanding a Constituent Assembly.
On the first anniversary of the coup, we ask the British government not to recognise the government of Porfirio Lobo and we want to show our solidarity with the Honduran people.
